Zhihu bets big on China's knowledge-sharing market

(China Daily) China’s largest Q&A platform Zhihu will invest billions of yuan in cash and traffic resources to support content creators in 2021, betting big on china’s burgeoning knowledge-sharing market.

“It will be Zhihu’s long-term strategy to focus on supporting creators in various fields and create value for the users. … We’ll pump in cash and traffic resources worth billions of yuan to support creators in 2021,” Zhou Yuan, founder and chief executive officer of Zhihu, said during the 2021 Xinzhi Youth Conference held on Wednesday night.

Founded in 2011, the Quora-like knowledge-sharing platform is no longer a simple follower of the foreign trendsetter. Fueled by forward-thinking investors and a growing number of experts in various fields, Zhihu has been actively embracing the paid content boom across the nation, extending to far more areas of business such as offering audio and video courses and e-books.

Currently, Zhihu has attained more than 2.5 million active monthly paid users. It has gained 100 creators with a monthly income of more than 100,000 yuan ($15,440) and 1,000 creators earning more than 10,000 yuan per month, according to Zhou.

During the conference, Zhihu announced it has upgraded the previous brand and slogan. The new slogan is “If there is a problem, there will be an answer”.

Zhou explained the new slogan highlighted the platform’s mission to allow users to better share knowledge, experience and insights as well as find answers.

As of December 2020, users have asked more than 44 million questions on Zhihu platform, creating a total of over 240 million answers, Zhou added.
