Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Northwestern University undertook a study to understand how effective fabrics are in trapping ultrafine particles that have contain the coronavirus. For this, they tested t-shirts, socks, N95, surgical masks, jean and vaccum bags.

The results show that most fabrics are effective in filteration, with the N95 masks are highly effective, and so is a reusable HEPA vacuum bag. However for homemade masks, multiple layers are required. But these additions make breathing more difficult.

The fabrics were also studied when damp, and after they had been dried. Results showed that while the damp fabric is effective and can be used again after a wash, repeated washing degrades the fabric, which is why they should not be reused indefinitely.

Denim

There is still not enough evidence to see what the most suitable fabric is. While denim was effective in blocking particles, the material is difficult to breathe through. N95 masks are easier to breathe through and provide similar levels of filtration.

The study also found that single-use and reusable vacuum bags blocked particles effectively, however it may have some material that are unsafe to inhale. While the study was limited, experts believe the data can be useful for sewers and makers when making masks.
