Indian demand for encrypted email grows by 155%, says ProtonMail


Mumbai: There has been a 155% increase in Indians searching for secure or encrypted email in the last 12 months according to a study conducted by email service provider, ProtonMail.


The Indian results were even above the global average. Searches for “encrypted email” increased by 50% in the last 12 months and searches for “private email” increased 123% in 24 months, by users across the world.


The study said that 2019-20 was the second consecutive year that searches in India for the same had grown. There was a 23% increase in such searches in the 2018-19 period, it said.


In 2019, London based market research firm, Ipsos Mori found that “79% of Indian respondents were concerned about their online privacy due to the actions of their own government.”


ProtonMail said that the rise of cybercrime in India could also be prompting more internet users in the country to look for secure ways of operating online. Data from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs indicates that 2018 saw the highest levels of cybercrime in the country since the recording of these statistics began in 2002.
