Google had announced Google Meet will integrate with Gmail. It will help someone with a Gmail account use the software for video conferencing. To web users the integration took place first.
Now Google Meet has started rolling out to Android devices on the Gmail app. Google had previously confirmed that the video conferencing feature on Gmail would be optimized for both iOS and Android.
“Today, we’re bringing Meet to Gmail on Android and iOS, so that you can easily join video meetings from your inbox,” Google wrote in a blog post today. “In the coming weeks, you’ll soon notice a new Meet tab on your phone’s Gmail app where you can see upcoming meetings scheduled in Google Calendar, and easily join them with a single tap.” You’ll also be able to create new meetings from Gmail, which creates a link that can be shared with others.
The latest functionality is very clear so users probably won’t notice it. The Gmail app has a new tab at the bottom that has ‘Mail’ on the left side and ‘Meet’ on the top.
Tapping on Meet opens a new page where users can create a new meeting or enter a new one. This function is switched on by default so users can see it once it arrives.
Google further notes that both G Suite customers and users with personal accounts will have access to the Meet page. It will also roll out to G Suite for Education accounts which enable Meet video meetings to be established. Many G Suite accounts for education don’t get the latest Meet tab.
There will be a configuration option to fully remove the Meet tab but the added code needed to enter Gmail’s Meet calls will still obstruct the size of the device. For that feature added, we will keep an eye out for the first APK.
