10 Things You Didn’t Know about Julia Hartz

Julia Hartz is one of the co-founders of Eventbrite. Currently, she is serving as the CEO of the corporation, which runs a website for ticketing as well as other aspects of event management. As such, Hartz has received a fair amount of coverage from business news.

1. Born in Santa Cruz, CA

Hartz was born in Santa Cruz, CA. For those who are unfamiliar, the hills in the region were named Santa Cruz by a Spanish explorer named Don Gaspar de Portola. Later, the hills lent their name to a mission, which went on to become one of the components of the current city. In the present, Santa Cruz is the heart of Santa Cruz County in Northern California.

2. Her Parents Divorced But Got Along Well Anyways

Divorce has been known to make for very hostile relationships. However, there is a real chicken-or-the-egg question that is relevant in such cases. After all, when a relationship sours because of divorce, chances are very good that it was already strained beforehand. Having said that, there are also people who get along very well even after they divorce. For instance, Hartz’s parents had two children before deciding that while they were each other’s best friend, they were better-off not married to one another. As such, they divorced, but they also made a choice to stay close. Something that had a positive effect on Hartz’s upbringing.

3. Went to Pepperdine University

Education-wise, Hartz went to Pepperdine University, which is a school situated in Malibu, CA. Besides the main campus in Malibu, CA, it boasts a number of other campuses in Southern California. On top of that, Pepperdine University has six international campuses in the six countries of Argentina, China, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

4. Studied Telecommunication

As for Hartz’s subject of study, she focused on Telecommunication. Of course, this is a very broad field, seeing as how it covers everything sent over wire, radio, optical, and other electromagnetic systems. As a result, it is much more useful to mention that Hartz studied communication as well as broadcast journalism. That can come as a surprise considering the kind of corporation that Hartz is now overseeing. However, it makes much more sense once interested individuals learn how she put her Telecommunication education to use.

5. Worked for MTV

In short, Hartz went to MTV where she worked as a development executive. As such, she was involved in a number of notable projects in the early 2000s. For example, Hartz was one of the individuals involved in Jackass, which was controversial in its time but nonetheless a notable part of the pop culture of the 2000s. Similarly, she was involved in other projects such as The Shield and Nip/Tuck, though that was when she had moved over to FX Networks from MTV.

6. Co-Founded Eventbrite with Her Fiance

Eventually, Hartz became a member of the team that founded Eventbrite in the mid 2000s. It is interesting to note that one of the other team members was Kevin Hartz, who was her fiance at the time but is now her husband. Generally speaking, the recommendation is to separate personal relationships from professional relationships. However, it seems safe to say that Hartz and her husband have made their project work out very well. In fact, it is worth mentioning that while Hartz is running Eventbrite, her husband has returned to investing as well as entrepreneurship.

7. Wants Her Daughter to Work in Something Like a Coffee Shop

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hartz takes work very seriously. This can be seen in her statement that she has been working ever since the age of 14, which was when she worked weekends at a coffee shop called the Ugly Mug. Hartz has contrasted this with the situation that she observes in the neighborhood that she lives in the present time, which was followed by her statement that she expects her daughter to work as well. Hartz doesn’t expect her daughter to work in a coffee shop, but she does expect her daughter to work in something like a coffee shop.

8. Followed the Rule of Never Working on the Same Thing At the Same Time

Hartz’s successful collaboration with her husband took serious effort from both of them. In particular, it is interesting to note that they followed a rule stated by their friends, which was that they should never work on the same thing at the same time. As such, Hartz and her husband always worked on different aspects of Eventbrite even when both of them were involved with the start-up on a full-time basis, thus making it much easier for them to avoid potential conflicts with one another because of their professional lives.

9. Her Role Didn’t Solidify Until Later

It took some time before Hartz’s role at Eventbrite solidified. Initially, she held the position of President while her husband held the position of CEO, which made sense because he had previous experience as an entrepreneur. However, this meant that Hartz’s role was rather nebulous. with the result that she was involved with various things in various ways. By the time that Hartz was 30, she decided that she needed something more concrete because she had become non-critical by that point. Something that led to her overseeing hires, which actually worked out quite well because her involvement in major decision-making gave her a very good idea of what kind of talent Eventbrite needed for where it wanted to go.

10. Had a Somewhat Bumpy Transition

Hartz’s rise to the position of CEO wasn’t quite as smooth as what one might expect. Apparently, when Hartz’s husband made the decision that he didn’t want to be the CEO of a large corporation in 2016, his decision came as a surprise to Hartz. On top of that, he had been working alongside her for a decade’s time by that point, meaning that his sudden absence was very much felt by her. Still, considering where Eventbrite is now, it is no exaggeration to say that Hartz has managed to transition into her current role very well.
