KOLKATA: Reliance Industries (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani said that countries in the future will compete over data capital, and added that he is confident that the government would bring in a sound regulation to protect this national resource and ensure data privacy.
“We are confident that the government will introduce a sound new data regulation framework to ensure data privacy,” Ambani said at a global Artificial Intelligence (AI) summit, RAISE 2020, on Monday evening.
Data, he said, is the raw material for AI, and intelligent data is digital capital, adding that in coming decades, nations would increasingly compete on digital capital.
He said “the time is ripe and the tools are ready” to make India a world leader in Artificial Intelligence, and make AI work for all Indians.
Back in August 2019, RIL’s telecom arm, Reliance Jio and Microsoft had announced a partnership to speed up India’s digital transformation, and both companies had announced plans to enhance the adoption of leading technologies like data analytics, AI, cognitive services, blockchain, Internet of Things, and edge computing among small and medium enterprises to make them ready to compete and grow.
On Monday, Ambani said India, which is now the biggest consumer of data, would maintain its leadership position on this score with 5G round the corner.
The RIL chairman also said that India is on course to being among the top nations on the fixed broadband turf as well with the country now rolling out a massive pan-India optical fiber network to connect not just all cities and towns, but each of the 6 lakh villages.
Ambani said India is also creating “capacity for affordable manufacture of all necessary digital devices, sensors and equipment in our own country, courtesy the `Make in India’ drive, adding that the country has also become a leading nation in computing power with its battery of world-class data centres.
