Bengaluru: Karnataka will soon come up with a cyber security police to address the needs of citizens, industry, students as well as the government, deputy chief minister CN Ashwath Narayan said on Monday.
Cyber security has gained utmost importance with digital transactions rapidly picking up, Narayan, who is also the minister for information technology, said after unveiling the mascots of cyber security. Beginning this year, the government is observing October as cyber security month to create awareness among citizens.
The government, he said, is increasingly adopting technology for delivery of public services. While this is benefiting citizens, the government also has to address the cyber security risks associated with it.
Bengaluru is home to a large number of technology companies and naturally will also be a favorite target of cybercriminals. Hence, it was important for government organizations to become more cyber aware. Cyber aware employees are the best defense against cyber risks in any organization, Narayan said.
He cited a US FBI report, according to which, the number of complaints from cyber-attacks has increased up to 4,000 per day, a fourfold increase compared to before the Covid pandemic. Apart from phishing attacks, there is a surge in malware attacks and ransomware attacks. Cybercriminals have launched thousands of “fraud portals” in the guise of collecting donations in the name of combating coronavirus, he said.
India In Third Place: According to the FBI’s report, India stands third among the top 20 countries in internet-related crimes. Apart from phishing attacks, defacement of websites and DDoS attacks have become prominent threats. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the deputy chief minister said, has put out an advisory that explains about the pandemic based cyber-attacks. The majority of the attacks are done via phishing emails, malicious advertisements on websites, and third-party apps and programs. Attacks on computers, routers, and unprotected home networks in the present work from the home situation are also on the rise, Narayan said.
