The brand new YamahaTénéré 700 has garnered more than its share of curious riders, and deservedly so. The promise and hype for this bike are high, and right now, people are looking to snatch one up for themselves. At the time of this writing, this off-road-ready beast is said to be deliverable to U.S. markets in 2021, with bikes delivered to the states arriving from the Japan production facility, and those on sale in Europe from the European production facility.

1. The 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 is an Adventure Touring Bike

For those of you new to the world of motorcycling and looking for your first bike, the term “adventure touring bike” might not be that familiar, so let’s go over the basics. An adventure touring motorcycle like the 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 700 is built to be able to handle long stretches of road in much the same way as standard touring bikes, such as the Honda Goldwing, yet be smart and sassy enough to go off-road to explore the various terrains, which of course, refers to the adventure side of things. As you can see, this bike is just made for those who not only want to take a long road-trip with its 4.2 gallon fuel tank, but also be able to handle some rough terrain as they explore the back country.

2. It’s Named After a Desert

Way back in 1977, legendary rider Thierry Sabine lost his way during the Abidjan-Nice rally race. He found himself in the Ténéré 700 Desert, located in the Sahara. As he tried to find his bearings, he realized that this would be a great spot for a new off-road competition. Hence, the 6200 mile Dakar Rally was born. To reinforce it’s unique dual sport toughness, durability and ease of handling, Yamaha decided to christen its brand new creation after a region located in the Sahara: The Ténéré Desert.

3. Yamaha Used the Best Riders to test the Yamaha Ténéré 700

To ensure the 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 lived up to its name, the company decided to have only the best riders test it for quality of performance and build. The list of riders included Peter Hansel, Adrien van Beveren, and Rod Faggoter, who all found the bike to be an outstanding ride. Yamaha also decided to include the Yamaha Ténéré 700 on their Yamaha Rally Team World Tour, to see how it handled the various terrains of each country visited, and make the appropriate adjustments after testing. According to motorcycling legend Nick Sanders, the Yamaha Tenere 700 prototype he rode was a fantastic bike. He made special note of its agility, light weight, and power.

4. The Engine is Inspired by the Famous Yamaha MT-07 Engine

The 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700, or “T7” as it’s affectionately known by some, comes with just the right amount of power for price point. This economical bike features a fuel-injected, liquid cooled 689 cc twin cylinder, inline engine. While for the most part, the Ténéré 700 is considered an “independent bike”, the engine design was inspired by Yamaha’s award winning MT-07 engine, developed using Yamaha’s very own “Crossplane Philosophy” or Crossplane Crankshaft Concept. This reliable engine, along with the Ténéré’s ability to scrounge over 200 miles per one tank of gas, makes this an economical, sturdy and dependable bike for adventure lovers.

5. Minimal Electronic Rider Aides

If you’re in the market for an adventure off-road bike that comes equipped with tons of electronic features, such as rider modes, Bluetooth connectivity or a fetching, 5 inch TFT display, then you may be disappointed, as the 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 has no such trappings. So, don’t expect modes or traction control with this bike. However, your ABS does come standard, and can be switched off and on at will. However, know that the cockpit is designed for additional devices, such as a GPS.

6. Properly Designed Ergonomics Mean Comfort for Long Rides

This bike was made with long distance traveling in mind. The frame is made using a light, narrow double cradle tubular steel frame, as such, you get a narrow chassis and fuel tank. This combination allows riders to use their knees to grip their bike whether sitting or standing for control. This is absolutely crucial when adventure riding, as you must constantly shift your body weight too and fro, in response to the terrain. Also, the flat, yet comfortable seat means the rider can enjoy maximized flexibility when riding. You also get a set of protective hand guards which combine nicely with the tapered handlebar for the most comfort during a long ride..

7. Braking Power Built to Handle Rough Terrain

There may be a chance you’re concerned that the dirt and grit kicked up as you ride may interfere with your ability to stop on a dime, but don’t be. The designers at Yamaha made this bike to handle it, so getting down and dirty won’t matter. For example, in the front, they’ve given you two wave 282 mm discs complete with Brembo brake calipers. As for rear braking ability, you get a 245 mm wave style rotor. As previously mentioned, ABS is standard for the Tenere 700, so you can forget about your wheels locking. Please note that you are left with the option to switch ABS on or off at will.

8. Dash Instrumentation

While it’s true the 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 is void of the traditional riding aides such as riding modes, it does have the bare essentials–just what you’d need in a rally race. First, information is delivered to you via an easy to read, LED display screen. Here, you can get a glimpse of the basics, such as gas levels, estimated fuel range and consumption, 2 trip meters and gear position information. Lightweight, basic, easy to use, and just what you’ll need.

9. Personalization is Easy with Yamaha Ténéré 700 Accessories

For many bike owners, part of the enjoyment of ownership involves adding some accessories. Yamaha knew this, and came up with some functional accessories to make your experience on its 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 a more pleasurable and personal one. Aftermarket accessories made specifically for the Ténéré 700 include a handy, rear carrier made from tubular steel, an aluminum top case, flat rally seat for added rider agility, and a 6000 Kelvin light output LED fog light kit to improve night visibility.

10. Excellent Suspension Worthy of a True Adventure Bike

Taking a long look at this bike in action, whether in real life or videos, and one of the first things you’ll notice is the responsive, all-terrain suspension setup. The designers at Yamaha decided to use a KYB suspension system, long travel, 43mm inverted, fully adjustable fork. This means the rider maintains superb control over the bike, whether standing on the foot pegs, or sitting as the suspension responds to any changes in terrain. Also, please note that steering is not compromised by rough terrain, and balance is assured. As for the rear, you get a single shock suspension, rebound damping, remote pre-load adjuster to help in adjustments to road conditions.
